Important Considerations When Purchasing Pallet Racks for a New Warehouse

Purchasing Pallet Racks

When purchasing pallet racks for your new facility, there are a few things you’ll have to keep in mind.

When outfitting your new warehouse, pallet racks are some of the most important purchases you’ll end up making. Your storage capacity will be dictated by the type of racking you choose as well as how you lay them out on your floor. In ideal circumstances, pallet racks will last years, so by making some important considerations during the planning process, you can ensure that your facility will be outfitted properly for the foreseeable future. Here’s what to think about.

Pallet Rack Size

Your racking clearly has to fit the internal dimensions of your facility, but there are a few other things to worry about. The length of your pallet racks can influence the overall flow of your processes for better or for worse, so consider how your facility is expected to function on a daily basis. You may be better served with two shorter length racks as opposed to one long rack. Width is another important dimension to factor in to your pallet racks as your aisle size will be impacted by this decision. Aisles that are too narrow may also negatively impact your facility’s workflow.

Weight Limits

Consider the products and the quantity of those products that your pallet racks will be expected to store. You’ll need enough capacity to reliably store everything without buckling under the pressure of extreme weight. This lessens the chance of an accident happening and also ensures you’ll get the most out of your new pallet racks since they won’t be subject to unnecessary wear and tear damage.

Choosing the Proper Type of Pallet Racks

The right kind of pallet rack can make a huge difference in how efficiently your warehouse operates. If your storage system is going to operate on a First-In, First-Out (FIFO) basis, you’ll need something like a push back racking system for maximum efficiency. On the other hand, a Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) setup would be better served with with a drive in rack system. Considering your products and your needs will help you make the best choice for the type of pallet racking to install in your warehouse.
